Hello, My name is Patrice Rubin. I’m 19 years old and I was diagnosed with AML leukemia since December 23, 2006. I was attending Grambling State University during the fall of 2006 and had to drop out of school, and then I attended summer school in 2007 during my first remission. I completed the fall term of 2007 but my cancer returned during the spring term 2008.
Cancer changed me in that it affected my education, which I’m determined to complete. I see all my friends who are now entering their junior year of college and wish I could be there with them. Cancer has made me stronger in that I now more than ever know I have to complete college. I’m now awaiting a bone marrow transplant and know I have to get my health back before I attend college again and I plan on it as soon as I’m in remission again.
I am an only child and my mother had to give up working because she needed to be with me. I live 159 miles form the hospital in Shreveport, LA and need assistance with transportation to and from the hospital and I help my mother pay rent. I would like to thank you for reading my letter and best regards.
